The Context

What is the Information Product Canvas Course?

The Information Product Canvas Course is a cohort-based virtual course that teaches data practitioners to gather data requirements using the Information Product Canvas. One six hour workshop, hands-on, facilitated live by Shane. Your team leaves able to run the pattern with their own stakeholders the next working day.

We teach your team to do the data work. No team, or no time? AgileData.io will do the work for you.

Sound familiar?

How many times have you heard this?

"That's not what I wanted."

"But that's what you asked for."

Does your team struggle with these?

Your stakeholders and your data team speak different languages. You are the translator, without a shared language you can use consistently.
Gathering data requirements takes too long. You are constantly asked if you are done yet.
The process is not fun, for you or your stakeholders. Nobody wants to turn up to yet another long-winded requirements workshop.
Stakeholder needs arrive full of ambiguity. You need a template that makes them clear and concise, and gets instant feedback.
Your data team cannot work out what to build from the requirements you capture. They need everything they need, and none of the detail they don't.
Your requirements are full of the what, but not the why. You feel like a data order taker, not a business enabler.
You capture screeds of detailed requirements that never get used. You need to focus on what matters and ignore the rest.

In this course your team learns to solve these problems with the Information Product Canvas pattern. Data requirements in 30 minutes or less, using a shared language.

run it a few times and stakeholders start bringing YOU a draft canvas. magic!

Proven patterns

What your team will learn from this course

Help your team understand, design and deliver the information a stakeholder really needs.

  • Deliver the data elephant one bite at a time

Capture requirements for one Information Product, with your stakeholders, in 30 minutes. Your data team can deliver it in days or weeks, not months or years.

    no more boiling the ocean

  • A shared language

Learn a data requirements language both your stakeholders and your data team understand. Stop converting "total value of orders last year" into "Dim Order, Dim Time, Order Value Fact" in your head.

no more writing two req docs

  • Collaborate visually with your stakeholders

Fill out the Information Product Canvas in front of your stakeholders, so they validate their requirements as you capture them.

no more documents dying in inboxes

  • Help prioritise what's important

Create requirements stakeholders can understand at a glance, compare against the other investment options, and prioritise with confidence.

    no more HIPPO prioritisation

  • Capture both the what and the why

Elicit and capture the actions and outcomes stakeholders want from the data they are requesting. Move from data order taker to trusted partner.

    goodbye order taking

  • A repeatable pattern you can teach your team

Learn a pattern you can pass on, so the whole team can do the requirements work with you. Working together is more fun.

    no more being the bottleneck

  • Deliver value early and often

Define requirements in small chunks, deliver each Information Product to your consumers as you go, then rinse and repeat.

Virtually in person.

The course is virtual. Shane is not. He is in the workshop room with your team, live, facilitating every session as a human. Nothing is pre-recorded.

Shane created the Information Product Canvas. He has spent over decades coaching data and analytics teams on how to combine agile, product and data patterns to craft their own ways of working, and training them on the patterns that solve specific problems.

The canvas is one of those patterns. It has been iterated with teams and companies of every size and shape. It really is a thing of beauty.

He has spent over 30 years in the data and analytics domain, in a myriad of roles.

The course syllabus

  1. Team up, let's get to know one another

We discover who is on the course, and what you want to get out of it. We then team up into the small group that we will work with throughout the course.

  2. Canvas overview

We learn what the Information Product Canvas is and the problems it solves.

  3. Canvas areas

We go through an example canvas step by step, to understand what we capture in each area, why we capture it and how that information is used when we build an Information Product.

  4. Hands on

We spend half the course in small groups going through a case study and populating the Information Product Canvas. We learn by doing.

  5. Pattern Storming

We learn about the Pattern Storming Canvas Workshop, a structured, collaborative session where the data team and stakeholders work together in real time to complete the canvas.

  6. Real world examples

We review real world Information Product Canvases from multiple use cases and industries.

  7. Continue your journey

The workshop is a starting point. Apply the patterns with your team using the companion site, live workshops and the AgileData.Coach chatbot. Your journey continues from here.

  8. Regular breaks

The workshop runs 6 hours. We have a 5 minute bio break each hour and a 30 minute lunch break in the middle.

Better together

Learn by doing, together

  • Virtual and live

Run over Google Meet and Miro. Nothing is pre-recorded. Shane facilitates every session live.

  • Active hands-on learning

Half the course is your team working in small groups, completing the canvas. You learn by doing.

  • Case study based

A case study based on the real world gives you the inputs you need and guides you through the process.

  • Regular Q&A

After each area of the canvas, a Q&A session gives constant feedback and support.

  • 1:1 canvas review

An optional 1:1 session with Shane to review and give feedback on the first canvas you complete for your own organisation.

  • Capped at 20 learners

Each cohort is capped at 20 people, so everyone gets the focus and support they need to be successful.

Frequently asked questions

How much face time will my team get with Shane?

Shane delivers this course live. Your team learns directly from him, with ample opportunity to ask questions and interact with both Shane and the wider team.

What is the expected time commitment for my team?

One 6 hour virtual workshop, plus the prework reading. We schedule the course to suit your team, their timezone and their workload.

Will the course be recorded?

No.

A large part of the course is completing the Information Product Canvas together in breakout groups. Teams often discuss real examples from their organisation, and that needs a private, confidential space.

What if we have fewer than 12 attendees?

We had a bunch of choices on how to charge for this course. We chose a fixed price to keep it simple.

With fewer than 12 we still think the price is excellent value. You could also invite another team from your organisation. The more the merrier, we say.

What is the refund policy?

We won't refund your money, but we are happy to reschedule your team's course if something urgent comes up.
